Women are considered the LIGHT of the house. But why is there DARKNESS within them? In a society dominated by muscle power and money-power, are the voices heard? So many voices in the Dark….

Atrocities against women and girl children have been on the rise. 56 long years of an Independent India have passed. Has the dream of our forefathers come true? “Only when a woman is able to walk freely at midnight, we are free”. I’m quite sure this hasn’t come true but has remained a mere dream!

A girl child who is just 8-9 years old being raped by a man as old to be her father. This is the order of the day. Till this day, in some parts of the country, women are treated as slaves, as bonded labourers, as just “machines”…. During the Gujarat – Godhra riots; women being stripped, raped, and killed… all of us remained as mute spectators, helpless and passive.

A pregnant woman’s belly is slit open and the foetus is burnt in front of her very eyes. This is how most of rural India understands rights of women and her “girl” child? Just a few days ago, women in a rural part of central India were stripped and beaten to get converted. Where is our secularism heading?

When we pen the atrocities… it’s a long, never ending list. The numbers of dropouts from schools are girls. Girls - very young and tender are pushed into flesh-trade and their life is ruined. Will there be an end to this?

The world today is on a fast track. In such a globalised world, why don’t we “Globalise Human Rights”? Friends, there are talks and seminars held everywhere, but let’s be practical. In the sense ‘action-oriented’ please! Not just words and thoughts but thoughts and deeds too.

Life is even more beautiful and pleasant when equality reigns. We the generation ahead, the generation next, need to take up these issues seriously. I hope the government too extends its hand in building an ‘India’ that is not merely shining in its face value but also shining in terms of her ability to weigh men and women on an equal scale. A country free from all troubles; making it an area of peace and harmony, a country where every human being’s dignity is preserved, man or woman – let that be ‘our factor to feel good about’.

Lets unite, breaking walls and barriers!
Lets come-together, breaking blind beliefs!
Lets fight forgetting our race!
Believe me! You and me! Just ‘US’
Can make a difference this “WOMEN’S DAY”
