Ragesh is an old YSM Leader who shared with me his experience in the college. He was disgusted with the rotten situation of the university students. When I met him sometime back, he explained to me the corrupt habits in the student community.

Especially during the election to students union, caste rivalry and money power dominated the canvassing. Student leaders served even liquor to their followers. Once the election was over, the leaders took law in their hands and disturbed the classes declaring strike at their whims and fancies.

“What is your response to this as an YSM Leader? I asked him. After a deep silence he replied, “I want to resist the evil”.

Ragesh gathered a group of friends during the next election to the student union. His panel of leaders declared their motto, “We shall strike the work, only for reasonable cause”. His friends did not spend any money for the election, except for the hand bills and wall posters.

But there was a very good response. They received 38% of votes. However most of the panel members got defeated in the election. Yet they were not worried, because their team became a force of resistance among the students. The victorious leaders were frightened to declare any strike that year. When they took any decision they consulted ragesh and his team.

A small team of committed people can stand for honest values and can challenge any corrupt force. A tiny candle, when lit, can defeat the surrounding darkness.

Movements like YCS/YSM and AICUF are the training ground for the resisting force to evil. Good can easily defeat the force of darkness.

Few Years ago an old YSM leader Miss. Devi with her friends, organized a multi religious prayer meeting in her college hostel, when there was communal tension in their town. The prayer meeting had a wonderful impact in the college campus. The tension, that was building up among different communal groups in the students world was released. The principal publicly thanked the YSM leader Miss. Devi and her team for their reconciliatory efforts.

In a remote village in the Nilgiris, Mrs. Chitra, an ex YSM leader organized a circulation library among her neighborhood families. Each family pays for a different magazine and circulates among the neighbors. At times they gather to analyse the impact of the magazines. Mrs. Chitra’s experience in YSM meetings helps her to evaluate the influence of mass media in her neighborhood meetings.
