Diwali is a very important festival of India. It is celebrated all over the country. Everyone loves this festival and waits for it eagerly every year. Diwali is a festival of joy for people of all regions and castes. This festival is celebrated to mark the victory of good over evil. Rama was the prince of Ayodhya. He killed the evil king Ravana in a battle to get back his wife Seeta. He then came back to Ayodhya to become an ideal king and also diwali is known as the “Festival of lights”. It is also celebrated in memory of Lord Krishna’s killing of Narahasura.
All the houses are cleaned and painted on this occasion. People spend the whole day in decoration their shops and homes. Colourful sweets and chocolates are displayed outside shops. Everyone goes for outing to the market in their new dresses. The houses are decorated with lights, candles, mud lamps, paper festoons and colourful designs.
The best part comes in the evening. All the lamps and candles are lit. The whole town looks like a fairy tale land. All around one can hear the sounds of crackers being burst. People greet each other happily and exchange sweets. Goddess Lakshmi is also worshipped in every house. Then they visit friends and relatives and exchange greetings. Greeting cards are also sent to friends and relatives. It is a festival to remove differences and bring unity among the people. Diwali brings joy and happiness to everyone. It is the favourite festival of children. But this joy can be spoiled if we are careless with crackers. We must enjoy this festival of lights in its true spirit. The lamps of Diwali will then bring light into our lives too.
