Whether child domestic work is a worst form of child labour or not has become a question of debate. There is a general belief that disadvantaged children are enjoying a relatively comfortable life and it is a good option out of poverty and or other forms of labour for children. Some child domestic workers also have the chance to go to school; and working as a domestic is part of their socialization.  There are some cases of children getting benefits or enjoying a better life compared to their own homes. If we try to see the inside of the reality, it is generally quite a miserable situation.

The working conditions of some child domestic workers give sufficient grounds for calling it a worst form of child labour, when their fundamental rights to education and childhood are denied and they are confined within the four walls of the employer’s household, where they are vulnerable to abuse, torture and sexual harassment. Studies show that more than half of the child domestic workers do not receive payment. Many children work for long hours – even up to mid-night. Many, who start working at a very young age, are sexually exploited, tortured and physically abused or are bonded labourers. A study shows that 97% of the child domestic workers in the capital city are working under the worst conditions. Hence we have to recognize child domestic work as a worst form of child labour.

Let us take the initiative in the elimination of domestic child labour exploitation from within our family, relatives, neighbourhood and let us realize the minimum standards for child domestic workers.
